Study Abroad Insurance
A short standard "travel" policy usually isn't enough for studying abroad — it typically only covers the initial departure and visa application. Consulates, universities, and immigration services apply stricter requirements to student medical insurance.
Key policy requirements:
- Coverage amount: For EU/Schengen countries, the minimum coverage is €30,000. For the US, Canada, the UK, or Asia, requirements are higher — typically $50,000 to $100,000+.
- Validity period and date coverage: The policy must cover the entire study period, or a minimum of 365 days (for a one-year national/type D visa). Coverage must start no later than the day you cross the border.
- Zero deductible (0% / 0 EUR/USD): For visa centers and embassies, it's essential that the policy has no deductible (the amount a student pays out of pocket for each claim).
- Mandatory core coverage: Emergency outpatient and inpatient care; ambulance services and prescription medication; medical transport/evacuation and repatriation; treatment for acute conditions (in some cases including emergency dental care for acute pain).
- Territory of coverage: The policy must clearly state the destination country or region (e.g. "all Schengen countries" or a specific country).
- Insurer accreditation: The insurance company must be recognized by the target country's consulate or immigration service (accredited insurer lists for visas).
Two stages of insurance for studying abroad
- 1Visa application and entry: At this stage, an international policy is issued — a specialized "Student" policy or a commercial policy for a type D visa.
- 2After arrival in your study destination: In many countries (e.g. Poland via NFZ, Germany via TK/AOK, Czechia via VZP), students additionally take out local health insurance for full access to clinics and hospitals at their place of study.
