How to choose an insurer: reliability and payout criteria
The policy price is not the main criterion. What matters far more is whether the insurer will pay when a claim happens, and how fast. Here is which indicators to look at when choosing an insurer, and where to verify them.

Why price alone is not enough
Two policies with the same coverage limit can differ a lot in what actually happens when you claim: how fast the assistance company arranges help, how long settlement takes, and how transparent the rejection rules are. That is why a company's reliability should be judged by public indicators, not by price alone.
Key criteria of a reliable insurer
Licence and supervision. The insurer must be listed in the National Bank of Ukraine register — the basic condition without which a company cannot sell policies.
MTIBU membership. Mandatory for companies selling compulsory motor liability policies. It guarantees payouts even if the insurer goes bankrupt.
Loss ratio. A healthy balance between premiums collected and claims paid. A ratio that is too low may signal problems with payouts.
Settlement speed. Reliable companies close most standard claims within 30 to 60 days.
Capitalisation and track record. Capital size, premium volume and years on the market show whether the company can meet its obligations under large or mass losses.
Customer reviews. Look not at the overall score but at how the company responds to complaints about rejections and delayed payouts.
Where to verify an insurer
Independent ratings (Minfin, Forinsurer, industry reviews) publish data on assets, premiums, payouts and complaint counts — compare them across several companies rather than relying on a single source. The NBU register and the MTIBU website confirm a valid licence and membership. Links to these resources are listed at the end of the article.
